Protect your teeth from injury and decay through simple practices of common sense. Due to the sheer amount of risks to our teeth and gums, you must take care to protect your teeth as much as possible! Such care includes eating the right foods, wearing safety equipment when applicable, developing positive oral health habits, and quitting all bad habits that increase your risk for oral ailments.

A great example of a common-sense mishap: NEVER use your teeth as a bottle opener. Your teeth are definitely durable, but are usually no match for much harder materials in our world, including bottle caps! If you use your teeth as tools, you can easily break off multiple teeth.

Eating well is a huge part of making sure your mouth stays healthy. Sugars within foods can cause tooth loss. If bacteria begin to build in your mouth, it will form a fine layer called plaque. When sugars are introduced, the plaque can convert the sugars into harmful acids that can erode the tooth enamel and expose your smile to cavities and other forms of tooth decay.

Be sure to maintain oral health habits of brushing for two minutes, two times a day, and flossing once a day. Using good, simple techniques will give your smile a fighting chance.

Not all oral health risks come from outside of your body. If you have bruxism, your teeth are at an increased risk of failure. Bruxism is the result of your teeth gnawing and grinding together, usually without your knowledge. The grinding of teeth can weaken your tooth enamel and even cause chips and cracks to occur. If you notice that your teeth are looking dull and flat, you may have bruxism. Check with your dentist if you suspect bruxism or other dental health problems.
